Fire near Bordeaux-Mérignac Airport in July 2026

Fire near Bordeaux-Mérignac Airport: a look back at a tragedy that marked the summer of 2026

On 21 July 2026, a violent fire broke out in the early afternoon in the immediate vicinity of Bordeaux-Mérignac Airport, in an area of scrub and vegetation situated to the south of the airport facilities, very close to the P4 long-stay car park.

Within minutes, the flames spread rapidly across particularly dry vegetation, fuelled by the extreme weather conditions of the summer. The plume of black smoke was visible as far as Bordeaux city centre. Around 26 hectares were eventually burnt before the fire was brought under control late in the afternoon.

Update: The fire is now fully under control. Monitoring operations, including the monitoring of hotspots, continued over the following days, and the area has been secured. No risk of the fire reigniting has been reported to date.

A human tragedy

Two professional firefighters from the Saint-Médard-en-Jalles fire station lost their lives in the opening minutes of the operation. Trapped by the flames inside their vehicle, they could not be rescued despite having activated their distress beacon.

Around 120 firefighters, supported by 60 vehicles and aerial resources, battled the blaze. Air traffic was temporarily disrupted: take-offs were suspended for several hours before gradually resuming.

Background and next steps in the investigation

This fire comes at a particularly critical time for the Gironde. The following day, a much larger fire broke out in Saumos and spread at an unprecedented rate, leading to the evacuation of tens of thousands of people, including those in certain neighbourhoods of Mérignac located outside the ring road.

A criminal investigation has been launched into the cause of the fire on 21 July. In August 2026, a 15-year-old boy was charged. He admitted to having thrown a cigarette butt at the scene. He is being prosecuted for unintentional arson resulting in the death of another person.

Impact on the airport sector and car parks

Bordeaux-Mérignac Airport has confirmed that the fire remained confined to the surrounding area and did not affect the airport itself. Commercial operations were able to resume quickly. However, this incident served as a reminder of the vulnerability of outlying areas to wildfires during periods of extreme drought.

The two firefighters who died were posthumously awarded the Citation to the Order of the Nation.
